Ken Lyon, M.Sc., P.Geol. – Workshop Facilitator and Luncheon Panellist

Ken is a Principal Hydrogeologist and Technical Director with the WorleyParsons Contaminated Sites Group in Calgary. He has over 25 years of experience managing contaminated sites and other environmental projects, ranging from Phase 1 environmental site assessments to major remediation programs at upstream and downstream hydrocarbon sites, different types of manufacturing facilities, landfills, and radioactive waste sites.

In recent years, much of Ken's work has involved strategy development for complex environmental liabilities and issues. This work has included liability exit strategies under asset purchase agreements, peer reviews of site assessment and remediation programs, monte-carlo simulations of liabilities in support of setting financial reserves under securities acts requirements, and facilitation of expert panel workshops to identify and analyse project risk.

 

Alex G. MacWilliam - LL.B., B.A. – Luncheon Panellist 

Alex, a Partner at Fraser Milner Casgrain, is Chair of the firm’s National Environmental Law Group and focuses on advising clients on all legal issues relating to the environment. These include compliance, contaminated land, climate change, dealing with regulatory agencies, responses to government policies and the development of internal environmental practices and systems. In 2005, Alex was appointed by the Government of Alberta to the Environmental Appeals Board.

Alex is widely regarded as one of the leading environmental law practitioners in Alberta. He is profiled in The LEXPERT American Lawyer Media Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada and in Best Lawyers and is rated by Practical Law Company as a recommended environmental lawyer. He has appeared before the Alberta Environmental Appeals Board, Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board, Natural Resources Conservation Board, Information and Privacy Commissioner, Alberta Motor Transport Board, Saskatchewan Highway Traffic Board, Federal Court of Canada and all levels of Court in Alberta.

Alex advises the firm’s clients in respect of all matters of an environmental nature, including the management and minimization of liability arising from environmental risks, environmental management systems and other risk management tools. When environmental incidents do occur, Alex is experienced in the legal aspects of emergency response and crisis management and has extensive experience in resolving disputes arising from such incidents through negotiation, mediation, arbitration and litigation.

Alex is frequently involved in major national and cross-border transactions in respect of the environmental due diligence arising in asset and share transactions, public offerings and financings. He works closely with the M&A, banking and securities lawyers at FMC to ensure that any environmental issues are identified and properly assessed.

 

Mike Mellross - P.Ag. - Luncheon Panellist

Mike Mellross is a Senior Environmental Project Manager in the City of Edmonton’s Office of Environment. In 2009, Mike took a lead role in developing the City’s Contaminated Sites Management Strategy for City Owned properties.  He continues to make use of his background in contaminated sites management as a member of the administrative working committee established to support Edmonton City’s Council’s Contaminated Gas Station Task Force.  Mike started at the City of Edmonton five years ago as an Environmental Manager for the Fleet Services Branch where he developed and implemented a comprehensive environmental assessment and remediation program for the City’s fourteen fuel station sites.  Prior to coming to the City, Mike was an environmental consultant working primarily in real estate due diligence and environmental management systems.  He has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Conservation Sciences and technical diplomas in Environmental Technology and Natural Sciences.  Mike is a registered Professional Agrologist through the Alberta Institute of Agrologists. 

 

Ian Radzichowsky - C. Tech, EP - Luncheon Panellist

Ian is currently the Director of Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management at HAZCO Environmental Services.  His 14 years of environmental experience at HAZCO, Nexen, Abandonrite and Laidlaw includes: well site reclamation, materials recycling, equipment operation, sales, field service, regulatory support, and business development.  Present duties include ensuring regulatory compliance for Hazco’s Canadian operations and developing environmental management programs for project and facility based operations including transportation, waste management, and standard operating procedures.  He also ensures due diligence through the review of current and emerging environmental regulations, review of 3rd party disposal and recycling options used by HAZCO, and assists in the development of new waste management options.  Ian also volunteers on various industry committees.  Prior to joining the Hazco Regulatory Affairs Department in 2004, Ian held various operations and sales positions in the Hazco Waste Services group from 1998 to 2004.

 

Brian Adeney- P.Eng. - Luncheon Moderator  

Brian Adeney, P. Eng of EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd is Senior Project Director for the Environment Practice covering the Prairies and Northwest Territories.  Brian has been with EBA for 11 years and previously worked in Ontario and BC. Brian has degrees in Geography and Water Resources Engineering and continues to provide senior review services on projects involving storm water, flooding and erosion in addition to a wide range of other environmental projects.  Many recent projects have involved the consideration of GHG emissions for remediation projects and Brian has been involved in the auditing of Environmental Management Plans at highway maintenance yards in Alberta.
