I am an Environmental Auditor

Environmental Auditors represent an elite group of environmental professionals who are experts on national and international auditing standards.

We award EP Auditor Certifications after a rigorous review of your education, formal audit training, employment history, and environmental auditing skills and knowledge tested through an online examination.

Here are the key criteria that you’ll need to meet:

Work Experience

You have at least five years of relevant environmental auditing work experience.

Relevant work experience should contribute to the development of knowledge and skills in some or all of the following areas:

  • Environmental management methods and techniques
  • Environmental science and technology
  • Technical and environmental aspects of operations
  • Relevant requirements of environmental laws, regulations and related documents
  • Environmental management systems and standards
  • Audit procedures, processes and techniques

Formal Audit Training

Applicants must have completed 35 hours of lead auditor training that contributes to the development and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Environmental management systems and standards against which audits may be performed, such as ISO 14001
  • Environmental science and technology
  • Technical and environmental aspects of various types of business activities and facility operations
  • Relevant requirements of environmental laws, regulations and related documents
  • Different types of environmental audits, audit procedures, processes, techniques, and guidelines for auditing, including ISO 19011

Education

You hold a recognized Canadian or international college diploma or university degree.

The degree or diploma should be relevant to the title sought. A relevant degree or diploma should concentrate on one of the following areas:

  • Engineering
  • Natural science
  • Environmental science or technology
  • Law
  • Business administration
  • Accounting

Audit Logs

You have completed eligible audit logs that document:

  • You have completed a minimum 7 audits in the last 5 years, 5 of which are in the applicants area of specialization (i.e. if applying EP(CEA), at least 5 audits must be compliance audits)
  • You have a minimum of 35 audit days, at least 25 of which must be in the applicants area of specialization
  • You have a minimum 21 onsite audit days

Overall experience must show that the applicant has experience with the technical competencies associated with the NOS for Environmental Auditors (See Appendices – ‘Technical Competency Dictionary’) over the course of the eligible audits submitted.

Two Options of Auditor Designation

EP(CEA): Compliance Auditor

You work with national and international auditing standards and focus on CSA Z773 or ISO 19011

EP(EMSLA): Environmental Management Systems Lead Auditor

You specialize in one or both the following areas:

  • Environmental Management Systems (EMS): audit organizations against the ISO 14001 standard and expertise to lead an EMS audit team or conduct audits
  • Sustainable Forestry Management (SFM): audit organizations against SFM standards like FSC, SFI, or CSA Z809 with skills and experience to lead an SFM audit team or conduct audits

Application Process

The Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board (CECAB) is responsible for overseeing the administration, evaluation and ratification of ECO Canada’s certification of EP Auditors in Canada. While ECO Canada acts as the certifying body for the EP(CEA) and EP(EMSLA) certifications, the Board, composed of key environmental stakeholders from across Canada, functions as a safeguard on impartiality for the certification and re-certification of applicants and members.

  • Pay the application and exam fee ($450)

  • Access your Auditor application profile

  • Submit your education, work experience, and auditing practice information

  • Await registrar approval

  • Write the Auditor exam online

  • Auditing Expert Reviews Audit Logs

  • Await final approval from CECAB

  • Pay the membership fee ($200) and receive certificate
