The number of Aboriginal environmental practitioners
Approximately 2% of environmental practitioners are Aboriginal people. This small proportion is consistent with HRSDC employment equity studies, which have found that Aboriginal people generally are underrepresented in the science and professional sectors. Focus group participants from the ELM Report noted that Aboriginal candidates are in high demand, and qualified candidates find employment quickly. Some commented that Aboriginal candidates could bring unique perspectives to the field when their traditional knowledge is coupled with western science.
