ECO Canada is a not-for-profit organization that was first established in 1992 under the federal government’s Sector Council initiative.
Over the past 19 years, ECO Canada has grown into its own as an organization focused on supporting Canada’s environment industry by communicating with industry stakeholders, conducting research and creating the necessary resources required to address human resource needs in order to ensure the success of this dynamic sector.

A: Primarily, ECO Canada (Environmental Careers Organization) brings together industry and academic professionals, and government to discover, discuss and develop solutions to the human resource needs of the Canadian environment industry.
Q: What are the main human resources challenges facing Canada’s environment industry?
A: Canada’s environmental sector is facing labour shortages all across the board due to the combination of an aging workforce and a demand for employees that is expected to rise by 1.6% annually from 2006 to 2011. Currently, 4% of the total employed Canadian labour force is engaged in environmental-related activities for at least 50% of their work time. Environmental skills are used by 12.2% of all employed workers.
