Today, over 500,000 Canadians are part of the environmental workforce and those numbers are growing every day. Nearly every sector of the Canadian economy now has an environmental component and employs environmental practitioners to ensure that regulations are followed and environmental impacts are kept to a minimum.

ECO Canada is a national, not-for-profit organization that provides a critical link between the environmental industry’s need for qualified practitioners and those looking for career and skills development in this growing area.

Since 1992, ECO Canada has kept its finger on the pulse of the Canadian economy—noting environmental trends, monitoring industry needs, and communicating those needs to educators and governments. Through ongoing research ECO Canada is able to provide resources to assist the environmental sector in its continued growth.

What's happening at ECO

The environment took centre stage for many Canadian high school students over the month of May as they worked collaboratively with educators to document an environmental issue close to home and propose solutions for a greener community. Through ECO Canada’s first annual video contest, four Canadian schools have been awarded $2,000 each for their video submissions. The schools include:

  • École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School, Lacombe, Alberta
  • Holy Cross High School, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
  • Lester B. Pearson High School, Gloucester, Ontario
  • Holy Trinity High School, Torbay, Newfoundland

All videos submitted to the contest, including the four winning submissions, can be viewed online at www.youtube.com/ecocanada. ECO Canada will be accepting applications for next year’s contest beginning in September 2010.
