Universities Keep Pace with Green Studies; Education Options

The development and transformation of environmental programs is a growing trend in Universities and Colleges across Canada.  This is partly due to student’s overwhelming enrolment in Environmental programs.  In the case of York University in Toronto, this year has seen a 30% increase for application into the environmental studies faculty.

York currently boasts undergraduate, graduate and PhD programs and offers 150 different courses in such subjects as resource management, climate change, urban sustainability, and animal and human relations. Despite their already impressive size, York continues to grow along with other Canadian institutions stopping only when they feel their student’s environmental appetite is satisfied.

Even though Universities such as York have faculties in environmental studies that date back to 1968, educators such as Barbara Rahder, dean of the York program, still consider it to be a relatively young area mostly because it is “changing all the time.”  Post secondary programs with an environmental focus have expanded from coast to coast to offer students education and training to meet the needs of a variety of diverse careers.
