According to ECO Canada, this year there will be five occupations in high demand in the environmental sector. These include; engineers, geologists, public relations specialists, computer scientists and biologists. There is an anticipated growth of 4.3 per cent in these green jobs by 2010, which is 2 per cent over the national average increase.
According to ECO Canada's 2008 employment labor survey, 65 per cent of environmental employers in Canada were hiring in 2008 and 71 per cent of green firms said that they plan to expand their businesses in the next two years.
Chris Stewart, Senior Marketing Manager at ECO Canada says the top three environmental sectors seeking employees in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, were: water quality, land quality and waste management.
"Despite how many layoffs we're hearing about right now, the (federal) budget reflected ... a strong emphasis on green jobs for the future, which is really significant to our field," said Stewart.
Employers have expressed to Stewart that there have been some mergers and acquisitions in a few major environmental companies. As far as any changes in their hiring practices; worst case scenario is a hiring freeze. Surprisingly enough, there are a few companies that are actually on a hiring spree.
