A 17 year-old Sir Winston Churchill High School student has been awarded a scholarship for his dedication to environmental initiatives in Calgary.
ECO Canada awarded Walter Pang $2,500 toward his first year tuition at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. As the top candidate out of four national recipients, Pang was also honoured with an additional $2,500 through the Edit Petrovic Memorial Scholarship -- a first for a Calgarian.
"I'm really interested in the environment because I really think of it as a relic passed from generation to generation," said Pang. "If you don't take care of the environment now, what will we pass on to our children and grandchildren?"
The Environmental Careers Organization of Canada, a not-for-profit organization that works to benefit the environment and industry, hands out four scholarships to Canadian students.
"This is the second year ECO Canada has run the scholarship program," said CEO Grant Trump. "Helping students get the education they need to become competent environmental professionals is a part of the organization's overall goal to supply the environmental sector with the very best."
Award recipients have to show leadership in their communities in the areas of environmental protection, conservation and preservation of natural resources, or environmental sustainability.
To be considered for the ECO Canada scholarship, Pang submitted an application, a reference letter and an essay.
