Pearson students win video contest prize

EMC News - A group of six video-savvy students at Lester B. Pearson Catholic High School have won their school $2,000 to continue their environmental efforts.

The Grade 12 students in Charles Deighton's communications and technology class entered ECO Canada's first video contest. The contest asked students to explore an environmental issue within the community.

The group - made up of Maiko Rodrigues, Jeff Urie, Allan Ziolkowski, Jordan Reyes, Jacob Porter and Victoria Molinski - spent two months working on their five-minute submission, called EcoEchoes. The video discusses the importance of using Ottawa's green bin program to reduce waste.

"The biggest change in our area is the green bin program," Allan said, explaining why the group chose to focus on the new program for their video. "If we could be the first school to bring in green bins that would be big news."

Original ideas for the project had the video set in the 1980s when recycling was not in vogue or set in a Michael Moore-style documentary.

"But we focused on what we thought was the biggest change," Allan said.

ECO Canada is a not-for-profit organization that focuses on supporting Canada's environment industry. They created the nation-wide video contest to assist students in exploring the environmental sector and its potential career opportunities.

Lester B. Pearson was one of four schools to win a $2,000 prize. The other three schools are located in Newfoundland, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
