University of Toronto Mississauga student Varun Gupta has been awarded a Student Ambassador Award by ECO Canada.

He's one of five post-secondary students across Canada who received the award and a $1,000 cash prize for excellence in environment-related research in Canada. Each student was recently invited to attend an international environmental trade show in Montreal to showcase their ideas for the long-term sustainability of Canada’s environment at ECO Canada's booth.

Gupta, 24, shared his research on the global significance of anaerobic methane oxidation in freshwater ecosystems.

He also had the opportunity to network with key decision-makers and prospective employers while learning how his skills can fit into the future job market.

ECO Canada is a non-profit organization, which works with individuals, employers and educators to support Canada's environmental industry.

The other recipients of the ECO Canada Student Amassador Awards are McGill University student Eyad Jamaleddine for his research on composting bioreactors, University of Ottawa student Dalal Hanna for “Singing Higher to be Heard? The Effect of Anthropogenic Noise on Red-Winged Blackbird Signals”, Queen’s University student Erin Jaggard for “Carbon Sequestration under Switchgrass Production in Southeastern Ontario”, and University of Northern British Columbia student Nathan Park for “Enhanced biogas production by anaerobic co-digestion of fruit and vegetable waste and sewer sludge - A full scale study.”
