Environmental internship program now accepting applications

June 17, 2009 - ECO Canada is offering post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain work experience in the environmental profession. They are now accepting applications for the 2009 Environmental Youth Corps Internship program.

In previous years the program has seen tremendous success with over 90% of ECO Canada interns securing meaningful employment upon completion of their internship term.

The EYC program does not “place” graduates in their jobs, as is the case with some internship programs. However, once someone is pre-approved for funding, internship candidates have the freedom to find their own job within the environment profession allowing them to target an employer of choice.

The following criteria must be met to be eligible:

• Be under the age of 30 and a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
• Be a graduate of a post secondary institution (min 2 year diploma)
• Be available for permanent full-time employment (not returning to school)
• Be unemployed or underemployed (working part-time, on a short contract of less than 6 months, or working outside of your field of study)
• Have not previously participated in a federal youth employment/education program with the exception of summer employment program participants
• Not already currently employed with the employer
• Not be a family member of the organization’s directors or senior officers
• Have the intention to obtain a permanent position in the environment industry
• If applying for a BEAHR internship, you must be of Aboriginal heritage (Métis, Inuit, and First Nation).

Since funding is allocated on a first come, first serve basis, we encourage graduates to apply today.

An ECO Canada internship can increase post-graduates chances of finding employment and getting a jump-start in their career. By becoming pre-approved for internship funding, applicants can target the companies that they want to work for and offer the potential employer a wage subsidy. This subsidy can help cover some of the training costs and risks involved with hiring a less experienced employee. The subsidy also gives graduates an advantage over other candidates who are applying for the same job.
