About Accreditation

Accreditation is a quality assurance process designed to ensure that services and operations offered by an educational program meet national standards as evaluated by an external body. If standards are met, accredited status is granted to the qualified program.

ECO Canada has developed a national environmental program accreditation system in collaboration with educators, accreditation professionals and industry.

Benefits of Accreditation

  • Increases enrollment in environmental programs

  • Facilitates school-to-work transitions for graduates

  • Provides a framework for continually improving the quality and efficiency of environmental programs

  • Increases cooperation, articulation, and resulting economies in the development of new environmental programs

  • Offers an objective measure of a program

Who is Involved in Accrediting Programs?

The Canadian Environmental Accreditation Commission (CEAC) is charged with developing, coordinating, and managing the national accreditation program for public environmental programs across the post-secondary sector including universities, colleges, CEGEPs, and technical institutes.

The CEAC, established in 2009, is a standing committee of ECO Canada and acts as a safeguard on impartiality.

This essential program was developed under the guidance of the Canadian University Environmental Science Network (CUESN) and the Canadian College Environmental Network (CCEN)—who requested an accreditation program be administered by ECO Canada for their environmental programs—and thanks to Human Resources Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) who funded the creation of the program.
