About the Project

This research project will continue ECO Canada’s work creating human resource strategies for the environmental sector based on accurate and current data.  From previous research, ECO Canada identified that even though the majority of environmental employees enjoyed working in the environmental sector, employers were not necessarily focused on what mattered most to their employees.   According to the 2010 Profile of Canadian Environmental Employment study, twice as many employers (42%) have lost workers due to issues with employee retention than due to downsizing, even during the2008/09 economic downturn (19%).  Survey results showed that many employers face retention problems that can be addressed through HR policies.  About one-third of employers (31%) who were hiring experienced difficulties finding the workers they needed. This was mainly due to a lack of appropriate job skills.

The research will revisit and build on these themes, providing insights about how employees feel about their work, their employers and their managers – as well as their plans to stay. The study also focuses on employee engagement strategies, answering the question for employers – what really works for employees and what is the payoff?
