Meteorologists work at a specialized or conceptual level. They are employed in a variety of areas such as weather forecasting; consulting; education & training; management; broadcasting; and research, among other things.

Meteorological Technicians work in more standardized aspects of meteorology. They are engaged in weather observation; instrumentation; inspections; briefing and consultation; and, with specialized training, some do forecasting that is primarily short-range (among other things).

The NOS for Meteorology are used to create a set of competency profiles for meteorologists and meteorological technicians that are unique for each area of specialization.
