ECO Canada is inviting teams of high school students across Canada to create a short video about an environmental issue in their communities.

The video should focus on:

  • An environmental issue outside of the school environment but within the local community
  • Environmental professionals working on a local environmental issue

Students – we encourage you and your team (with the permission of your team sponsor)
to get out in your community, take on an issue you are passionate about, and have fun!

Registration closing date: All teams must submit their application form by February 19, 2010 Video submission closing date: All teams must submit their video by April 1, 2010

Video contestants must:

  • Be from a Canadian high school (in grades 9 – 12)
  • Be in a collaborative team from the same high school
  • Ensure that only one video per school is entered into the contest
  • Have a team sponsor who is a full-time staff member from your school who can provide consent from school administration to participate in the video contest

  • Fill out the application form and submit by email at career.awareness@eco.ca or by fax at 403.269.9544 by February 19, 2010
  • Create your video
  • Send us your video by April 1st, 2010 in .AVI or .MPG format to:

Video must:

  • Be between three- and five-minutes long (videos longer than five minutes will be disqualified)
  • Be submitted in .AVI or .MPG format
  • Contain only original material ( video may not contain any copyrighted material that you have not obtained the right to use, including photos, artwork, music, video clips, voices, etc.)
  • NOT infringe or violate the rights of any third party — permission, licenses, releases, and waivers must be obtained from any third party (including, but not limited to all copyright holders, and all individuals appearing the video) and any and all permissions, licenses, releases, and waivers must be sent in to ECO Canada when submitting your video
  • NOT contain offensive language, gestures, or behaviour

Videos will be reviewed by an external panel of judges from the education and environmental sectors.

Videos will be judged on:

1. Environmental Issue

  • Articulation of local environmental issue (15 points)
  • Inclusion/coverage of environmental practitioners working on the environmental issue (15 points)
  • Documentation of the effects of the issue on your community (15 points)

2. Quality of Video

  • Creativity (20 points)
  • Clarity of ideas and vision (15 points)
  • Technical expertise (10 points)

3. School Initiative Plan for the Prize Money

  • Scope of outreach within your school (5 points)
  • Environmental benefits for your high school (5 points)

Total possible points: 100

One winner per region will be awarded $2,000 to put towards an initiative to better their school community. The five regions are:

  • Atlantic: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island
  • Quebec
  • Ontario
  • Prairies: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, Northwest Territories
  • West Coast: Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon
