Is it only a contest for students in grades 9 – 12 or can any other grades enter?

This year, the video contest will ONLY be for students registered in a high school, or in grades 9 12. No CEGEP student entries will be accepted. No junior high school or elementary school entries will be accepted.

How many students can be on one team?

To have an eligible team, you must have more than one student. There is no limit to the number of students who can participate in creating a video for your school. Remember, you must also have one staff member as your team sponsor.

What is the role of the team sponsor?

The team sponsor must be a full-time staff member at your high school. She/he will generally support the team in its efforts to develop the video, and then approve it for submission, ensuring it meets the criteria and guidelines outlined in the ECO Canada video contest rules. The team sponsor is also responsible for providing details about the project to your school’s administration and then demonstrating their consent to have students’ participate, as well as submitting all appropriate consent forms to ECO Canada.

Who will my team be competing against?

A team can enter a video if they are from a Canadian high school. You will be competing against high school teams from your region. One prize will be awarded to a school from each of the five highlighted regions. The regions are:

  • Atlantic: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island
  • Quebec
  • Ontario
  • Prairies: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, Northwest Territories
  • West Coast: Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon

How many videos can be entered into the contest from each school?

Only one video per school may be entered into the contest. To ensure that only one video is submitted, please keep your school administration up-to-date on your progress in creating your video. If more than one video is submitted to ECO Canada from one school, ECO Canada will select the first video that was submitted.

If our video is submitted after April 1, 2010, will it still be considered for the prize?

Your video must be submitted by midnight on April 1, 2010 by midnight (12:00 am) Mountain Standard Time. If it is submitted any later, it will automatically be disqualified.

If our video is a few seconds longer than the five-minute limit, will it still be eligible to win?

No, if your video is any longer than five minutes, or any shorter than three minutes, it will be disqualified.

How do we submit our video?

Send us your video in .AVI or .MPG format to:
Eco Canada Video Contest 200- 308 11 Avenue SE Calgary, AB, T2G 0Y2

Or by email to career.awareness@eco.ca

What does ECO Canada do with our video after it is submitted?

Once your video has been submitted to ECO Canada, it becomes ECO Canada property. If your video is chosen as one of the top five videos in your region, we will post it on the ECO Canada website for the general public to view. We reserve all rights to use your video in any way we see fit, as well as to use your team name and school in media releases. Please make a copy for yourself. Please note: you may not submit your video into any other competitions once you have uploaded it onto our website.

What will my team receive if we win?

One prize of $2,000 will be awarded to the winning school from each region. The prize will go towards the school initiative that was outlined in your entry form.

How will the winner be notified?

Your team will be contacted using the contact information you provide on your entry form. Make sure it is accurate and clear. It may take a month for the panel of judges to select winners, so please be patient. We will only contact the top five teams from each region.

When will we find out if we have won?

Videos must be submitted by April 1st 2010. The review panel will make their decision by the end of April, and team sponsors will be contacted by April 30th, 2010.
