Bring your environmental expertise and experience to the team at the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO), an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The ECO is mandated with reporting to the Legislature on the implementation of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993 (EBR), and progress in Ontario on climate change, energy conservation, and other environmental issues.

The ECO is hiring for one (1) permanent Policy Advisor position.

Using your environmental expertise, this position will contribute primarily to the ECO’s mandate to report annually on environmental protection and environmental rights in Ontario. In particular, this role will focus on: reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness of government’s environmental policies and practices; contributing to our reporting duties related to ministry compliance with the EBR; developing recommendations for government action; and communicating the ECO’s analysis through reports and presentations. This position may also help, as needed, with the ECO’s other reporting responsibilities regarding energy conservation and climate change.

The following qualifications are required:
• University degree(s) and/or significant work experience in relevant fields, such as environmental studies/science, environmental policy/law, natural resources management, geography or biology.
• Strong research, writing and analytical skills to produce published reports and internal briefings.
• Proficiency in analyzing policy and specialized technical materials, and interpreting it for general audiences.
• Excellent judgement, ability to work independently without close supervision, solving routine and complex problems.
• Strong time management skills to manage workload, balancing short-term and daily reactive tasks with planning and executing long-term projects.
• Strong communication and networking skills, to build relationships with relevant stakeholders, make public presentations, and help promote awareness and understanding of the ECO and its activities.
