Founded in 2000, ECO Canada’s Environmental Professional (EP) certification provides formal recognition of your environmental expertise and professional integrity. Below you will find information on EP criteria, governance and the foundation for certification competencies.

EP Certification Criteria

The EP community consists of thousands of diverse professionals across Canada– including environmental scientists, technicians, engineers, biologists, managers, consultants, and executives – who meet the national standards of excellence for environmental work.

EP members maintain their designation year after year to showcase their credibility, connect with the industry, gain recognition and take advantage of exclusive benefits.

The Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board (CECAB) is responsible for the overseeing the administration, evaluation and ratification of ECO Canada’s certification of EPs in Canada.

CECAB is responsible for the overseeing the administration, evaluation and ratification of ECO Canada’s certification of EPs in Canada. While ECO Canada acts as the certifying body for EP Certification, the Board, composed of key environmental stakeholders from across Canada, functions as a safeguard on impartiality for the certification and re-certification of applicants and members. Advisory Committee

In order to support the evolution of EP Certification, ECO Canada works with a committee of advisors from various areas of the environmental industry. This group of individuals provides valuable input on the direction of the industry and alignment of membership criteria.

Coming soon, we will be making changes to the certification process for EP and EPt applicants which will include the administration of a nationally recognized certification exam. More information is available to members on the status of this project.

NOS Research and EP Specializations

National Occupational Standards (NOS) are competencies required to perform successfully in a particular occupation. They describe the standard acceptable skills and knowledge required of environmental professionals in the areas of core knowledge, transferable competencies, and technical skills.

EP specializations are set by the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for environmental employment, including 14 diverse areas related to Environmental Protection, Resource Management, and Environmental Sustainability.

Each specialization has a unique set of standards for proficiency, creating the foundation for EP Certification. This allows you to gain recognition for your skill set and demonstrate the entire scope of your expertise.
