Am I eligible?

We award EP Certification after a rigorous review of your education, employment history, and validated environmental skills and knowledge. Here are the key criteria that you’ll need to meet:

Work experience
You must have at least five years of environmental work experience in Canada and this experience must be recent (obtained within the past ten years). If you’ve worked outside of Canada, you must have at least five years of environmental work experience, including one additional year of environmental employment with a Canadian employer.

You hold a recognized Canadian college diploma or university degree of a minimum two years, or equivalent international credentials. If you obtained your degree or diploma outside of Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia, or New Zealand, you’ll need an educational assessment to demonstrate the Canadian equivalency.

Environmental competencies
EPs must meet a minimum standard of environmental skills and knowledge according to National Occupational Standards (NOS). The NOS is a guide for the skills and knowledge for professionals to do their jobs competently within their selected fields of specialization.

How does the process work?

Once you’ve paid your application fee, you’ll submit your online application. To complete your application, you’ll need:

  • Your resume including current employment information
  • Your areas of specialization you’ve selected
  • Three references to validate your experience

ECO Canada staff will review your application and determine if you meet the eligibility requirements to proceed to the self-assessment. Once you’ve successfully completed your self-assessment, your references are then contacted to validate your experience and competence.

The registrar will review your application and determine if it can be submitted to the Approvals Board. The Approvals Board meets the second week of every month, and you will be notified of your certification status within two (2) business days of that meeting.

Once approved by the Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board (CECAB), you’ll need to pay your membership fee to be officially certified as an EP.
