Job Description

This position is responsible for achieving compliance through adherence to applicable federal, provincial and municipal regulatory requirements. This position is also required to manage the end to end Environmental Management System (EMS). Key components include an environmental policy, a planning process that integrates environmental with the business processes and operations across the organization, an organizational structure with clear responsibilities and ownership, implementation systems and operational controls, measurement and review process, and a system to review key environmental issues and opportunities with Senior Management and Board

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ensuring EMS requirements are established, implemented and maintained according to ISO 14001
• Regularly reviewing the Environmental policy and the effectiveness of the EMS and ensuring relevant changes are made in a timely manner
• Ensuring that EMS is implemented and that environmental matters are properly handled at all stages across all depts. Collaborating with third party consultants and advising internal depts. on Environmental remediation activities.
• Defining and implementing policies and procedures internally to ensure relevant departments (Investments, Real Estate Finance, Property Operations, Asset Management and Developments) are compliant with our EMS  
• Overseeing and effective administration of an environmental compliance database, Refined Data related to various environmental issues and opportunities; identifying material Environmental risks and opportunities via an annual audit, measuring and reporting progress throughout the year
• Conducting annual EMS audits across the organization to identify and track new Environmental risks and issues
• Handling and investigating nonconformity and ensuring corrective and preventive actions are taken on existing properties and development projects
• Communicate requirements / changes to regulation to properties on an ongoing basis. Also communicate specific expectations for properties – they could be communicated via the Sustainability Guidelines
• Facilitating training to relevant departments on environmental requirements, could include working with third party environmental consultants to deliver training
• Develop reports for the Board, Sustainability Committee and relevant departments on material Environmental risks, issues and opportunities including remedial action plans
• Work collaboratively with sustainability team, particularly on the Environmental agenda and support the push for reporting and certification at properties

•University education in Environmental Sciences and a relevant Professional Designation.

•7-10 years of relevant work experience.

•Experience in developing and/or implementing EMS.

•Experience in environmental assessments and auditing or an equivalent background.

•Knowledge of environmental statutes and regulations and the ability to review regulatory requirements and assess their applicability.

•Extensive experience with Phase I & II ECAs, remediation, compliance audits, etc.

•Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

•Proven analytical, problem solving and organizational skills.

•Demonstrated experience in managing projects, teams, service delivery, timelines and budgets

•Punctual, reliable, detail oriented, task oriented, and organized

•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written

•Must be able to work well in a team environment

•Self-directed and self-motivated with the ability to succeed in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment

•Desire to learn continuously, work more effectively, and enhance technical and professional skills

•Ability to facilitate discussions with multiple parties and align on key decisions

•Environmental knowledge in Facilities, Property Management and Development/Construction would be an asset.

•This position requires work related travel. Therefore, a valid driver’s license, insurance & personal vehicle is required (work-related travel expenses will be compensated).
