Job Description

Rangeland has an opening for a Fisheries Biologist, Environmental Inspector whose primary focus will be to carry out fish populations and habitat assessments and environmental inspection of oil and gas development and utility construction projects.  The successful candidate will work collaboratively with our managers, environmental staff and client’s construction personnel to conduct environmental inspections during pipeline and road construction projects to ensure compliance of environmental and approval documents. Rangeland is looking for someone with direct experience in a similar role. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Responsibilities:
• Lead fish populations and habitat assessments in the role of Qualified Aquatic Environment Specialist (QAES);
• Conduct pre-construction aquatic assessments;
• Conduct environmental monitoring by providing QAES input during pipeline, road and utility crossing installations;
• Conduct water quality monitoring during instream and trenchless construction activities;
• Lead fish salvage programs during construction;
• Lead reclamation and bank restoration projects at waterbody crossings;
• Prepare aquatic assessment reports, environmental protection plans, and Code of Practice Notifications;
• Work with our engineers to provide aquatic data to assist with the development of road crossing structures; and
• Liaise with clients, construction personnel and regulators;
• Conduct pipeline and access road rights-of-way environmental inspections of timber salvage, strippings/topsoil salvage, grading, backfilling, watercourse crossings and reclamation activities;
• Ensure compliance of environmental program documentation;
• Provide environmental protection and mitigation recommendations at the field level; and
• Manage and execute drilling waste management programs during pipeline horizontal directional drills.

• B.Sc. in biology or related field (or equivalent diploma with experience) with a minimum of three (3) years’ aquatic assessment related experience with emphasis in working in Alberta;
• Experience in the role of QAES with detailed knowledge of aquatic environments and mitigation measures;
• Professional Biologist (P.Biol.), or eligible for registration with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, or equivalent;
• Experience in the role of Environmental Inspector and water quality monitor, with preference for individuals with pipeline and road construction experience; 
• Experience with drilling waste management would be an asset;
• Experience conducting other biological surveys is an asset;
• Knowledge of Alberta environmental regulatory requirements as it pertains to oil and gas projects;
• Certified to operate an ATV, boat, and other field equipment;
• Certified Crew Supervisor Backpack Electrofishing;
• Safety certifications: First Aid, CSO/PST/CSTS, H2S Alive, TDG and WHMIS, ATV course;
• Experience using various software, including Word, Excel, ArcGIS;
• Excellent communication and organizational skills; and
• Professional demeanor.

This position is generally 80% field and 20% office based.  The individual must be prepared to work outdoors under variable weather conditions. Overnight out-of-town travel, evening, weekend and shift work will be necessary. Some of the work associated with this position may be located in remote areas for extended periods of time and may require overtime, weekends and variable hours. This job is physically demanding requiring a moderate level of physical ability as the worker must be able to conduct all field aspects of the job.
