Reporting to a Supervisor in Environment & Land, this position is responsible for providing environmental and planning expertise related to the planning and obtaining of regulatory approvals for transmission and distribution electrical infrastructure, and generation facilities. The Planner, Environment & Land will compile and analyze relevant information; consult internal and external stakeholders potentially affected by projects; resolve issues of conflicting interests; submit applications and obtain regulatory approvals especially from Alberta Environment and Parks and the Alberta Utilities Commission. The Planner is responsible for implementing environmental policies and initiatives of Alberta and ATCO to the projects. This position includes assisting other groups and departments in transmission and large distribution, decommissioning, line mitigation and capital maintenance projects.

• Identify planning and environmental risks to the scope of projects as well as develop project schedules and cost estimates
• Complete desktop and field level assessments of sensitive environmental features
• Analyze data, including spatial data, to identify land-use and environmental constraints for preliminary facility locations based on economic, technical, social and environmental criteria
• Prepare and submit applications for permits and approvals required for assigned projects
• Manage consultants and contractors to ensure planning and environmental studies and associated reporting is completed on time and within budget, and overall to meet regulatory requirements and company policies
• Participate in activities such as contractor orientation, training, audits, incident reporting, and liaison with regulatory agencies.
• Undertake and use technical and regulatory assessments for assigned projects in the project planning and permitting stage, including obtaining required regulatory approvals
• Keep abreast of regulatory developments, trends and changes, and provide information to ATCO Electric
• Implement legislation changes that affect our industry and processes on assigned projects
• Stay current in Government and industry standards, and changes to ensure corporate compliance
• Represent the Environment & Land Department to the project team
• Prepare and distribute project notification material, and communicate (meetings and correspondence) with stakeholders such as, private landholders, government agencies, industrial companies, indigenous communities, interest groups, and the public
• Undertake consultations with external stakeholders for assigned projects
• Resolve concerns raised by external stakeholders by proposing mitigations with support of ATCO internal departments: commercial, planning, land, engineering, construction, maintenance and operations personnel
• Provide field support as required
