Position Type/ Hours:
This is a permanent full-time position working thirty-five (35) hours per week within the Human Resources Department. This position is located in the community of Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s urban centre.


Position Description:
Working under the direction of the Manager, Health and Safety, the Senior Advisor, Environment is responsible for supporting the Municipality in the ongoing development and execution of the Municipality’s Environment, Health, and Safety Management System. As Senior Advisor, Environment this role is responsible for leading in the identification, assessment, and control of environmental hazards. Primary responsibilities of the position include:


Guidance: Provide leadership to the Environment, Health, and Safety team and operational areas with respect to environmental management. Maintain direct involvement in daily operations and the delivery of overall program execution. Ensure the effective execution of the Municipality’s environmental risk management programs including operating approvals, waste handling, emissions, spills, and releases. Facilitate awareness and compliance with regulations, policies, practices, procedures, industry standards, and best practices. Develop and maintain relationships with all stakeholders, as well as advocate for continuous performance improvements. Provide support to health and safety processes as required and support the integration of the overarching Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) management system.


Program Development: Support the ongoing development of the (EHS) management system and lead the development and execution of comprehensive environmental management programs. Conduct research and provide recommendations to support compliance with regulations, industry standards, and best practices. Develop policies, practices, and procedures; analyze data; measure performance and system effectiveness. Support operational areas in the implementation of, and compliance with, the Municipality’s EHS management system.


Service Delivery: Identify, prioritize, and manage environmental related risks across the Municipality. Resolve environmental related enquiries and concerns, and act as subject matter expert. Conduct positive interventions, inspections, audits, and investigations. Identify trends, gaps, and best practices. Support and/or deliver orientations, training, and coaching. Facilitate the implementation of preventative measures, action items, and recommendations.


Undergraduate Degree in Environment, Conservation Sciences, or related discipline is required. Post-secondary education in environmental sciences or related studies is preferred.
Environmental Professional (EP) designation is required.
Five (5) years’ experience as an Environmental Advisor, preferably within an environmental compliance capacity including five (3) years’ experience in a leadership role is required.
An equivalent combination of work experience and education may be considered.
Experience working in a municipal or public-sector environment with unionized and non-unionized employees is considered an asset.

You will possess the following:
Expert knowledge and demonstrated experience in enforcing the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.
Intermediary knowledge of a wide range of environmental legislation including the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
High degree of familiarity with best practices related to environmental management and EHS systems including the implementation of ISO14000 standards.
Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with leadership, management, workers, external agencies, and the public.
Responsible self-starter with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal oversight.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Collaborative leadership skills to facilitate the execution of the Municipality’s environment, health and safety management system, reinforce a positive health and safety culture, and guide behavioral changes.
Problem solving capabilities to identify, prioritize, and manage risks.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Must be willing to work in unsanitary conditions and in all weather conditions (immunizations strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions).
A valid Alberta Class Five (5) driver’s licence is required.
