Your Opportunity


As a Vegetation Ecologist you will work on all phases of resource development and permitting projects, including environmental assessments, permitting and compliance. You will collaborate with project management, regulatory, wildlife, soils, GIS and reclamation professionals and provide sound advice related to vegetation and wetlands management.

This role can be located in Sidney, Burnaby, Kelowna, Kamloops or Terrace, BC.
 

Your Key Responsibilities

 

  • To design and implement baseline vegetation surveys for species and ecosystems
  • To classify and map ecosystems following Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping and Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory protocols
  • To conduct vegetation field surveys, including rare plant surveys, weed surveys, vegetation monitoring, wetland surveys, tree inventories, and/or ecosystem classification surveys
  • To contribute to environmental plans related to vegetation and wetlands management
  • To write technical reports presenting results of baseline studies, assessing potential effects to plants and ecosystems, and describing suitable management and mitigation measures
  • To develop restoration and/or revegetation plans and designs

Your Capabilities and Credentials

 

  • Strong understanding and experience in federal and/or provincial environmental assessment process, and demonstrated knowledge of relevant provincial and federal regulations and guidelines
  • Experience scoping, budgeting and leading the vegetation and wetlands components of environmental assessments
  • Knowledge of BC flora, ecosystem classification, and provincial data collection protocols
  • Professional level competence in ecosystem mapping including: Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping, Wetland Mapping, and Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory methods and standards
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record required
  • Technical field knowledge of vegetation in western and northern Canada
     

Education and Experience


A Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology or a related field is required.
Fully qualified professional (e.g. Registered Professional Biologist, Forester or Agrologist) accreditation required. ISA-Certified Arborist, in addition to one of the required professional designation is preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Vegetation Ecologist contributing to environmental assessments in British Columbia.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining stationary at a workstation for long periods of time. Field work may include work in remote environments, challenging terrain and exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
