Environmental investments and activities have intensified over the last decade, which have contributed to the substantial growth of green jobs in Canada. These shifts, along with demographic trends, present both opportunities and challenges for the sector and its workforce.  

Our research forecasts labour and skill shortages that could impede Canada’s ability to achieve its environmental objectives over the next decade. This report follows on from our Labour Demand Outlook which forecasts sizeable hiring demands across the environmental sector

Report Highlights

  • Post-secondary graduates are essential to reaching environmental goals across all industries. 
  • About 76% of environmental workers in 2019 held a postsecondary credential, compared to 63% of all workers across Canada
  • Environmental workers are often qualified to work in a number of different industry sectors
  • Employers will be challenged to find qualified and experienced green candidates for a number of critical occupations, specifically Life science professionals,  Mechanical engineers, Facility operation and maintenance managers, Landscape architects & Urban and land use planners, as well as Forest technologists and technicians & Conservation and fishery officers.

To address these shortfalls, collaboration among government, educational institutions, employers and workers will be required. Environment-specific knowledge and skills can be acquired through specialized post-secondary programs, work experience, or through continuous learning and professional development.
